Shanghai’s ongoing heatwave will continue into this week, with high temperatures reaching upwards of 37 degrees, weather authorities say.

Sunday was this year’s 12th “high temperature day,” marked by temperatures hitting 35 degrees and higher, as the downtown Xujiahui weather station recorded a high of 35.3 degrees at midday. The hottest district was Baoshan, where the high reached 35.9 degrees.

A yellow heatwave alert, the lowest on a three-tier warning system, was released at 1:33pm yesterday, before being lifted at 5pm.

Today is forecast to be sunny, with afternoon thunderstorms in western regions of the city. The mercury is expected hit 36 degrees, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The skies will clear from tomorrow, and highs of 36 degrees are expected for tomorrow and Wednesday. Thursday’s high temperature could top out at 37 degrees.

This year’s 13th typhoon, Shanshan, formed on waters 2,250 kilometers southeast to Japan on Friday. The storm is not expected to affect China, according to the national meteorological center.
