The city was drenched in sweat and downpours on Thursday morning.

For the second consecutive day, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued an orange heat alert, the second highest alert on its three-tier system, at 9:18am on Thursday, warning the high could rocket to above 37 degrees Celsius.

Thunderstorms started to hit downtown areas and Baoshan District around 11am, which triggered a yellow lightening alert, the second of a four-tier system, at 11:16am. 

At 11:25am, the weather authority released a yellow alert for showers, also the second of a four-tier system, warning residents to brace for showers with precipitation up to 40ml within an hour.
